Every angler and their dog has used, if not heard about the superb Enterprise Tackle range of imitation baits, and just when anglers had thought they had seen it all and there was nothing that could hit the shops to surprise them, the company release Imitation Snails!
UKMA have had our hands on some of these little gems in the prototype stages, and have used them a fair bit over the past few months, so when the final products were delivered to the UKMA office, we were all looking forward to trying them out on the bank - especially as the finished product differred from the prototypes we had been sent.

The Enterprise Tackle Imitation Snails are, as you would expect, an imitation of the most common water snail that is found in the vast majority of waters in Europe. The Water Snails have been made out of a soft rubber compound which is extremely needle friendly but also resiliant enough to allow the baits to be reused numerous times. In the packet, Enterprise have placed three different sizes to suit the situation that the angler may find themselves in. The baits have a hole in them that doubles up for several uses.
The Water Snails have already been impregnated with fish proteins for added attraction, but the rubber compound used is porous and will take on any flavour or attractor that the angler wishes by soaking them in the chosen liquid for a few days before use or if pierced with a baiting needle several times then compressed into the liquid and released to draw the flavour into the compound quicker for casting to showing fish.

Straight out of the packet, the Water Snails are bouyant, but Enterprise have included three lengths of foam (one length for each size Snail) which fits snugly into the aperture of the respective sized bait. This allows the angler to create some very effective pop-up presentations including Zigs, Chod rigs or any other situation where an extremely bouyant bait is an advantage. The hole in the bait can also be used to house a split shot on the end of the hair or filled with boilie paste to create a critically balanced or bottom bait. For fishing in weed, the Imitation Snails really come into their own as the fish will be used to feeding on the real life snails that inhabit the water flora, and you have a much higher chance of the fish picking up a snail without a second look than you do with a boilie or other non-waterborne natural bait.
Final Thoughts
We had thought that we had seen it all with regards to imitation baits, but Enterprise Tackle surprised us with these and got us thinking about other baits that could now be incorporated into the range (not going to say what though!!). When we first heard of these and the prototypes turned up at the office, one of the team immediately mentioned about anglers on Conningbrook in Kent a few years ago experimenting with real snails as bait on there to trick the extremely wary fish that resided in the water at the time. Now that we have received the final product, they have exceeded what we expected and have opened up a new approach to the waters where the fish are hooked on natural food sources.
